Wake me up before you Cacao
Have you heard of the new tea on the block? Step aside green tea, here comes the caffeine free, naturally energy boosting cacao tea. Also known as chocolate tea, this beverage is in reality no new discovery. In fact the ancient Mayans and Aztecs have long before used it for its famous health benefits. The cacao plant has a long and beautiful history of ceremony and ritual throughout different cultures.
Cacao tea is made from the fibrous outer husks of the cacao bean, which when steeped in hot water, produce a warm flavour very similar to chocolate. It carries with it a whole host of nutrients, has hardly any calories and contains zero sugar, it’s fast becoming the super hero of the health drinks world.
Did you know that cacao tea is rich in iron, zinc, calcium, B vitamins, vitamin A, and also magnesium? Not only that but it is also packed with antioxidants. It could be considered a supplement if you have deficiencies in any of these areas, as well as a treat. And since it has also been shown to help sleep, a mug before bed is a fabulous body balancer to set you up for a night of restful slumber. It is also a natural mood enhancer- that’s right even without caffeine. Cacao husk contains theobromine, a naturally occurring compound found in cacao plants and tea leaves. It’s a slow- release stimulant which means a gentle boost without the sudden crash you get from caffeine products.
Cacao tea also has a high rate of sustainability since cacao husks have historically been seen as a waste bi- product of other cacao products by the west. Now, Europeans are waking up to the benefits and deliciousness! Since the supply chains are already in place, cacao tea can be made to a high quality without adding much to the plants carbon footprint in the way of transport. In fact, making better use every part of the cacao plant is the most sustainable approach overall. The plant grows in hot countries all around the globe, but not all to the same standards. Just like coffee, cocoa farmers need a fair- trade living wage in order to sustainably produce high quality cacao. We ensure that the supply chain of our chocolate tea products is transparent and non-exploitative.
So, whether you’re a lover of chocolate but not the calories, a diabetic looking for a sugar free indulgence, an insomniac, or just someone who like to keep their eyes and ears open for new flavourful adventures, give this chocolate tea a swirl. We’ve been converted. A detoxifying drink that tastes like chocolate? Could it ever be another way? In fact, we’d like to share our favourite way to prepare it in the most indulgent way (and still with far fewer calories than a hot chocolate). Got a sweet tooth? Add a little milk (oat, coconut or dairy are all good) and some local honey or brown sugar to lighten those dark chocolatey notes into dreamy creamy healthy choco treat. Simply the best of both worlds.
