40 + plastic bottles prevented from entering the ocean & landfill per cushion. Maemara takes used plastic bottles, destined for landfill or ocean pollution. The plastic bottles are then broken up and formed into flakes, from which we obtain 100% recycled yarn. This yarn is then weaved in to the fabrics which make our range of groovy homeware items.

More than 1 MILLION plastic bottles are bought every minute across the globe and ONLY 9% of all plastic waste is being recycled – the rest ends up in the ocean, landfills, and wider natural environment. Maemara’s very ethos lies in reducing the single use plastic which is destroying our oceans and earth.
Each Maemara cushion is made with 100% recycled fabric and filling, over 40 plastic bottles are used in every cushion we make.
Founded in 2019 by three earth and ocean-loving individuals, Maemara is a brand with conscience; producing stylish, zero-waste products to liven up your lounge and brighten your bedroom. We are passionate about tackling plastic pollution, environmental conservation and sustainability, and we advocate a reduce, reuse recycle lifestyle.
What does our name mean and where does it come from? Mãe from the Portuguese word for mother and mar comes from the Latin word mare, which means sea. Maemara is ‘mother ocean’.
