Struggling to get to sleep at night? I hear you! Lockdown has resulted in millions of us struggling to get a restful nights shut eye. What’s the solution?.. Get up earlier.
Hear me out – I know you’re exhausted and the thought of getting up even earlier leaves you wanting to go to bed right now, but I promise it is so worth it.
After months of spending nights tossing and turning followed by being woken by my children throwing themselves on me in the morning, I was left feeling blurry eyed and ratty. I existed through each day on a diet of strong coffee to keep me awake all day followed by a large glass of wine to help me drift off after I had finally put my laptop away for the night.
Looking back, it’s not a shock I was struggling to get any quality hours of sleep.
One day, I decided enough was enough. I needed to break this toxic cycle and sort out whatever was making me so tired every single day. I started by getting up earlier. This was no mean feat! I set my alarm for half an hour before my children normally wake up.
Excited by the prospect of my new routine, I got out of bed on day one feeling a strange new sense of control. I had decided I was going to spend my new found half an hour of morning wisely with a 10 minute yoga practice, affirmations and a cup of hot water and lemon enjoyed in complete silence.
The feeling of smug togetherness when my children woke up to find me in the kitchen watching the birds out the window with my hot drink was very real.
I was calm and not shouty – we all got ready, no one was late. When my watch hit 10pm that evening, I was exhausted. Having managed to stop myself from pouring my nightly, medicinal glass of red, I climbed into bed already feeling the welcome weight of sleep on my eyelids. It was the best night’s sleep I had had in ages.
Since then I haven’t kept to my routine every single day. There are days I have missed my yoga practice and definitely days where my evening wine has slipped in. But I feel far more in control of my day now – I’m sleeping brilliantly and the knock on effects of that reach far and wide.
I’ve tweaked my routine and added things to it over time – I’ve shared it with you below.
Wake up half an hour earlier – take control of your day!
Complete a 10 minute stretch routine – I love this one.
Repeat your positive affirmations – I use these cards.
Drink a cup of lemon & hot water (I pre slice lemons and freeze them) – be completely still and silent, why not look out your window and watch the world.
Make time to eat breakfast – porridge with mixed berries and a drizzle of honey is my go to. You’re going to need some slow release energy after that early monring!
Don’t have any caffeine after lunchtime – it stays in your system for ages!
Get out once a day for some fresh air.
Turn down the lights an hour before bedtime and limit the amount of time you spend looking at your screens.
Try and limit your alcohol intake.
Mist your pillow with some relaxing pillow mist to aid restful sleep.
Hit the sheets by 10pm – you’ll be totally wiped out by now.
I hope it helps if you’re struggling too – let me know in the comments if you try any of it out and share your own tips too!
Love Andrea xx
